Polyps are common growths in the colon and rectum, affecting 15-20% of adults. Some may develop into cancer. Polyps are usually asymptomatic but can cause bleeding, mucous discharge, or bowel changes.
Diagnosis is through colonoscopy, which also removes polyps. All polyps should be removed to prevent progression to cancer, usually done during a colonoscopy.
Complete removal prevents recurrence of the same polyp, but new ones may form, so regular follow-up colonoscopy is necessary.
Depending on the size and number of polyps removed, you may need to undergo more frequent colonoscopies to look for additional growths in the future.
